Say hello to scene 2 of the second draft of the rewrite! This is where Charlotte decides to go to follow her goals after all and such. It's rough, still, but it's looking more refined. I've actually noticed that this might turn out to be longer than the original 102 pages I turned into ScriptFrenzy. I checked with my original pdf of where I was supposed to be at at this point, and it was about 13 pages. This new rewrite is rounding 16 pages. Fun fact for you guys, but I thought it was pretty cool. I might actually still be in my 100 page goal after my rewrite.
There is only 3 days left of the Frenzy. So to all of my friends who are still in the race to finish on time, I bid you all the best of luck!
INT. CHARLOTTE AND MCKAY’S APARTMENT - NIGHT
TITLE: MARCH
SUBTITLE: 4 YEARS LATER
Living room with original paintings on the walls, wood
floors and decorative lights. A coffe table has scattered
notebooks on it. 25-year-old Charlotte walks into the
apartment, turns on the light, and takes off her shoes next
to the door.
Charlotte’s fish, FIMM, is swimming in his bowl on a table
in the living room.
CHARLOTTE
Hi, Fimm.
Charlotte opens up the bottle of fish food and sprinkles
some into the fish bowl. Fimm swims up to the surface
eagerly and starts eating the papery food. She watches him
eat for a bit then walks into her bedroom.
Charlotte passes a jar that says LOTTE’S TRAVEL FUND on the
side of it, and sets down a copy of THE SEATTLE TIMES on the
edge of her desks, next to a box that says REJECTION SLIPS,
filled with rejection slips, and a box that says ACCEPTANCE
SLIPS, which is empty. There is a pile of scripts and
manuscripts on her desk too. She sets down her purse, lets
her hair down, and closes her door to change out of her
TULIO waitress uniform. The door immediately reopens with
her in comfortable sweats and a t-shirt. She makes her way
back into the living room, sits down, and turns on the
television, biting her nails.
Shortly after, MCKAY, Charlotte’s younger sister, enters the
room, carrying a bag of groceries. Charlotte looks over her
shoulder at McKay, then back at the television.
CHARLOTTE
Hey Mac.
MCKAY
Hey Charlie. How was work?
CHARLOTTE
Fine.
(pause)
How’s the wedding coming along.
McKay puts the groceries away in the kitchen.
MCKAY
(groans)
It’s stressful, let me tell ya.
First of all, Chris still hasn’t
told his folks we’re getting
married. Secondly, I’m supposed to
get fitted on Thursday, and I have
a flower appointment Friday
morning. By the way, do you think
you can cover for me again on
Saturday?
CHARLOTTE
(spaced out)
Uh huh.
MCKAY
Stop biting her nails. I can hear
you from the kitchen.
CHARLOTTE
It helps me think.
MCKAY
It’s disgusting.
McKay shuts the fridge and walks into the living room. She
sees the mess of notebooks on the coffee table and gets
frustrated.
MCKAY
Oh my god, Charlie, if you’re going
to live with me you’ve got to help
me keep this place tidy.
CHARLOTTE
What? Oh...I do. I was just about
to do some work.
MCKAY
Can’t you do this in your room?
This is my living room too.
McKay starts to pick up the notebooks and look through them.
MCKAY (CONT’D)
What’s in these anyways?
Charlotte sets down the remote and sits up to stop McKay.
CHARLOTTE
Whoa, dude, stop. That’s mine.
Charlotte grabs them from McKay.
MCKAY
Chill out. What are you hiding in
there?
CHARLOTTE
Nothing. They’re just my old,
college notebooks.
MCKAY
What do you need your old, college
notebooks for?
Charlotte flips through one of the notebooks.
CHARLOTTE
I need a new story idea. There’s
several written in between notes
from classes and whatnot. I write
down every idea, no matter how lame
or corny it may be.
MCKAY
Haven’t you given up on novel
writing yet, with all of the
rejections you’ve gotten?
Charlotte glares at her and looks back at the notebook.
CHARLOTTE
I don’t know. There are stories to
be told.
MCKAY
But why not use a different medium?
Obviously, you’re not meant for
book writing! What about...art?
CHARLOTTE
(shrugs)
I’m not as good as an artist as you
are. I’d like to stick to writing.
McKay shakes her head and turns to leave.
CHARLOTTE (CONT’D)
Hey McKay, wanna help me pick out
an idea?
MCKAY
No. I have to work on my art.
CHARLOTTE
You can do it tomorrow. It’s late
anyways. Just help me for a second.
McKay groans and sits on a chair, sitting Indian style. She
reads the notebook.
A TELEVISION ANNOUNCER appears on the screen.
TELEVISION ANNOUNCER
Coming up, Kael Evans speaks about
his new film, Helheim, releasing
Christmas of this year. Crowds are
already talking about this
msut-see. Here is a sneak peek of
the interview.
Charlotte looks up at the television as KAEL EVANS appears
on screen, dressed in a purple, button-up shit with the
collar popped, jeans, and a pair of sunglasses on his head.
He’s in a studio.
KAEL EVANS (ON SCREEN)
I’m not surprised that things are
working out so well for me. I
always knew I would succeed in this
line of business. I hear people on
the street say, ’Have you seen the
trailer for Kael Evans’ new movie?
It looks amazing. The effects look
so good and the visuals are
insane.’ My response is ’Fuck
(television bleep)
James Cameron’s Avatar. It’s the
beginning of a new era, and Helheim
is gonna take the win on Best
Movie!’
The announcer appears back on screen.
TELEVISION ANNOUNCER
There you have it folks. As
colorful and arrogant as ever,
Evans already has people
pre-ordering their tickets for
Helheim, coming to theaters this
Christmas. In other news...
The murmur of the TV fades as Charlotte turns to McKay.
CHARLOTTE
Can you believe it? Kael Evans, my
old buddy in college, did it. He
said he’d make it into the
business, and he did it.
McKay doesn’t look up. She’s still reading.
MCKAY
His cinematography in Amsterdam was
trippy.

CUT BACK TO:
INT. CHARLOTTE AND MCKAY’S APARTMENT
Charlotte is staring blankly at McKay.
CHARLOTTE
He was high the entire time they
filmed it.
Charlotte notices McKay still reading seeming rather
interested in the material.
CHARLOTTE (CONT’D)
Find something?
MCKAY
One of your lists.
CHARLOTTE
What?
Charlotte takes the notebook from McKay. She reads over what
she wrote 4 years earlier.
MCKAY
What is it?
CHARLOTTE
(hesitates)
I made this list 4 years ago.
MCKAY
But it says 5 years.
CHARLOTTE
That’s because this was a list of
goals I made to be accomplished
within 5 years.
Pause.
MCKAY
Well?
CHARLOTTE
What?
MCKAY
It’s only been 4 years. You still
could accomplish everything. You’ve
still got a year.
McKay leans over and looks at the date on the list.
MCKAY (CONT’D)
A little less than a year, but
still.
Charlotte gets up and paces the floor for awhile. McKay
watches.
CHARLOTTE
You know something, you’re right. I
made these goals 4 years ago, and
have done nothing but practically
the opposite of all of them. I can
do this.
McKay picks up the notebook and reads through them.
MCKAY
What are you going to do first?
Charlotte looks back at the TV where the interview with Kael
Evans has started.
CHARLOTTE
I still want to write. But maybe
novels aren’t my thing. Kael made
it in film, maybe I could too. I’ll
script write.
MCKAY
Okay, then for one, you need to
move to L.A. and get a job as a
writer.
CHARLOTTE
(laughs)
You don’t like me living with you?
MCKAY
It’s my apartment. I want my own
space, especially since I’m getting
married.
CHARLOTTE
I help pay for rent.
MCKAY
It’s still my place. I’m the one
going to school up here so Chris
and I can open up our own
restaurant. What are you doing
here? Mooching off of your younger
sister, that’s what. You’re a
writer. Go to where people write.
Charlotte nods, disregarding the hostile tone of McKay,
thinking everything over, biting at her nails. She stops
biting.
CHARLOTTE
Yes...yeah! You’re absolutely
right! I can get my own place, and
then, I’ll get a job, and get a
dog... It’s perfect.
McKay looks down at the notebooks and points to the
bulletpoint about Danny.
MCKAY
Was Danny that guy you dated in
college?
Charlotte’s eyes widen, and she looks almost despaired.
CHARLOTTE
Yes.
McKay rolls her eyes about him and looks back down at the
list.
MCKAY
That guy’s a dick. You’re so much
better off.
CHARLOTTE
(solemn)
I guess.
McKay looks up at her.
MCKAY
You don’t still care about him, do
ya, Charlie?
Charlotte sighs, then shrugs and winces at the question.
CHARLOTTE
No! That was like, four years ago.
McKay looks at her questionably, then shrugs.
MCKAY
Well, good, because he’s an
assface.
Charlotte nods and paces the floor again, biting her nails.
CHARLOTTE
Mac, I think I’m going to do it.
I’ve got one more year... I’m going
to accomplish everything I set out
to 4 years ago.
(pause)
And I’m going to start right now.
Charlotte heads for the door and walks out. The door slams.
A moment passes and she walks right back in, past McKay,
towards her room.
CHARLOTTE (CONT’D)
I realize it’s like 2 in the
morning. I’ll start tomorrow.
Charlotte closes her bedroom door. McKay just shakes her
head and changes the channel on the TV.

The Writing Process
Hello Friends! Welcome to my writing space! I am starting this blog to note the daily progress of my script 5 Years From Now, which I am planning to write 100 pages of in 30 days. As the days go by, I plan on posting the few pages I write, along with maybe some hardships, some successes, and perhaps even some rewards within this writing process.

And The Rewrite Begins!
Hello bloggers! :)
It's official. I have started the rewrite process, FINALLY! Here is what I've come down to for the start of my script. Originally, I had Charlotte in the cafeteria with some of her friends, and they were all talking about where they were going to be in 5 years. But I never liked that beginning. So I took an old novel idea I had lingering, (and still have yet to finish, actually), and brought it to life in my script a little bit. Mind you, this is all fresh written material, and I may go back and change it in, yes, the third draft. Good thing I love writing so much. But here is what I've got.
[Yes Jana, it is Roezek. DEAL WITH IT!...Love you!]
Anyways, with that said and done, I have the first scene for you. It actually turned out to be longer than my beginning scene with the caf in the first draft, which is good! I may still be over 100 pages by the end of this after all. I just wish scriptfrenzy wasn't down so I could post things up on there, and so I could see how my friends were doing with their scripts.
Also, I have figured out my next task. First of all, I need to work on my second spec script, in case I get that amazing call from Nickelodeon in August that I made it to the next round, and I have to have a wonderful second spec ready to send afterwards. I'm still deciding what I'd rather write: Parks and Recreation, or Archer, and I love both of them a lot. Parks and Rec seems more difficult for me to write because it has such a particular story arc. But then again, Archer is incredibly vulgar, and almost too funny for me. Not saying that I can't take it's funny, but I don't know if I'm funny enough. So we'll see. I've got scripts from both, so lots of reading to be done this next week. Thank goodness that this challenge is coming to a close. Time to get back on the writing wagon, (since I took a week off and all). But besides the second spec, my next task is to finish my novel of "The Hatter" (I'll inform you guys about that one later), fixing up the script of it, possibly, although I might just try to sell it as a novel. It's a very particular story, very descriptive, and can't really be fully told in a script, at least not yet. But even yet, the next task, the point I've been trying to get to, is that my next big script challenge will be an animated one. I'm still playing with what the content should be about and so far, I've got two animated character ideas I'm working with: crabs, and ostriches. It's a little strange, okay, it's a lot strange. But I have a story idea in mind for the crabs, and I just really want to do an ostrich movie. I don't know why, but I feel like the ostriches have been neglected. I might even do a flamingo movie? I don't know. They're all just ideas, obviously. But more to come with that in later writing processes. For now, I'm just going to rewrite 5 Years From Now. After I make my tune-up, I'll share it with others to get feedback, and get it tidy and ready for the big city of Hollywood!
Slowly but surely, I'm making myself a nice portfolio of my work, getting ready to make big bucks, and my name in the credits. But we all know it's one step at a time, and luckily, I can walk for a long time.
Enjoy the beginning, and excuse the typos. It's late! And I'm very tired.
FADE IN:
EXT. BALCONY - EVENING
The sky is orange. The sun is setting behind the hills. The
castle balcony is overlooking a small town. KEREN walks out
onto the balcony, holding her crown, looking solemn. BEN
follows her.
KEREN
If you must go, I understand. I
will not hold you back.
BEN
Keren, please...
Keren turns around to face him.
KEREN
No, please don’t. Ben, I love you,
but...I guess this is for the best.
We’re two different people. You’re
a Roezekian, and I’m a Tyrent. Our
countries are in a war right now.
BEN
I can’t help the desires of my
father.
Keren looks down and turns back to the sunset.
KEREN
(hesitates)
Do you remember that night in the
woods?
BEN
(smiles)
Ay.
KEREN
I’m glad we connected that night.
Ben nods. He walks up behind her and lays a hand on her
shoulder.
BEN
There are things in this life that
are incomprehensible, unavoidable,
and...
Keren turns to face him.
BEN (CONT’D)
Unexplainable. My father’s desires
are not my own. As much as I am a
born Roezekian, I would like to be
a Tyrent.
KEREN
Ben, you have an opportunity to
save your life. If you join your
father’s army, you’ll be saved.
BEN
You don’t have faith in your own
army?
KEREN
(shrugs)
It’s not that I don’t have faith. I
hope, I dream, and I believe,
but...without you...
(bows her head)
There is no hope.
(looks up at Ben)
I spend 15 years of my life in a
dungeon cell, fending for myself,
fighting for my life. I’ve always
been independent, and I’ve done
fine on my own. That
comfortableness in independence all
went away when I met you. I feel
safe with you.
Ben smiles at her.
KEREN (CONT’D)
I believe because of you.
Ben takes her head in his hands. CHARLOTTE’s voice overlays.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
Ben takes her head in his hands and
says...
BEN
That’s why I’m staying.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
Keren looked at him, surprised,
eyes welding with tears.
Keren looks at Ben, surprised, her eyes filling up with
tears.
KEREN
What?
CHARLOTTE V.O.
Ben smiled and said...
CHARLOTTE V.O. AND BEN
To hell with my father. I am here
for you.
Ben gets down on one knee and takes Keren’s hands.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
Ben knelt on one knee, taking her
delicate hands in his. He looked
her directly in the eyes.
BEN
Nice ass.
INT. CHARLOTTE’S DORM ROOM - NIGHT
21-year-old CHARLOTTE, petite and pretty, stares at an open
document on her laptop. The scene just described is written
as a novel on the document. She’s in her pajamas, her hands
on the keyboard. The cursor is blinking after "NICE ASS."
She hesitates and backspaces. She types:
"DID I TELL YOU I’M A HOMO?"
The cursor blinks after the line. Charlotte is half-smiling
to herself, biting her nails.
CHARLOTTE
Sappy love stories.
Charlotte clicks out of the document and opens up her
Facebook. She has no new notifications. She types DANNY
DINTSKIT into the Facebook search bar and opens up his
Facebook. They are not friends. Charlotte sighs, moves the
mouse over the ADD AS FRIEND button, hesitates, then clicks
home. She reopens her novel and scrolls up. She stops at a
line that says:
"IN FIVE YEARS, IT WILL BE THE END OF THE NEW WINTER, AND
THE WAR WILL BEGIN."
Charlotte looks at this line contemplatively and sighs. She
bites her nails and looks at herself in the mirror.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
Where do I see myself in 5 years?
Charlotte pulls out a notebook and starts flipping through
the pages. Some of the pages have randomly jotted down notes
with circled material, boxes, some with arrows, some with
doodles. One of the pages has a full drawing of Edvard
Munch’s "The Scream." She stops at a blank sheet of paper
and writes at the top:
5 YEARS FROM RIGHT NOW:
Charlotte bites the end of her pen.
CHARLOTTE
5 years from right now, I will... I
will...
Charlotte looks back at herself in the mirror.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
It’s hard to say where I’ll be in 5
years time. I have lots of goals,
lots of dreams. I’m not necessarily
what you would call a simple girl.
CUT TO:
A series of pictures of:
Holding a violin under her chin and tapping her foot to a
beat, stretching at a trapeze class, scuba diving with
dolphins, going off a jump on skis, setting up for a family
portrait, playing volleyball, eating sushi, painting a
portrait of a nude model, throwing tamahawks and knives,
driving go-carts, filming a man slapping another man across
the face, backdiving off of a waterfall, riding on a horse
over a jump, reading a novel in a graveyard, sock shopping,
and writing story notes on a wall covered in giant pieces of
newsprint paper.
CUT BACK TO:
INT. CHARLOTTE’S DORM ROOM
Charlotte is staring at her sheet of paper.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I’m not complicated, just complexly
put together. I’m not a quitter,
and I’m not a failure. I’m simply
just a writer, a simply
well-rounded, audacious,
intelligent and experienced writer
that doesn’t know what she wants in
5 years time.
CUT TO:
Montage of several different shots of Charlotte in her room,
thinking:
Laying on her side on her bed, lifting a 5-pound weight,
laying back on her bed with her head hanging off the side of
it, biting her nails, dancing around her room, doing a
sudoku puzzle, watching a movie on her laptop, and drinking
a soda.
Charlotte sits back down at her desk and stares at the piece
of paper. She turns around to her roommates side of the
room.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
For starters, I will have my own
place.
Charlotte writes it down.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
(pause)
I will have a novel published.
Charlotte writes this down. She continues to write as ideas
come to her.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I will...have a dog, will have
finally traveled out of the
country...will be a successful
writer.
Charlotte looks at the short list she’s created and opens up
a drawer, finding a small picture of her and Danny under the
clutter. She looks at a piece of paper taped above her desk
that says:
I HOPE. I DREAM. I BELIEVE.
In her handwriting. Charlotte looks back at the picture of
her and Danny.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I hope. I dream. I believe, in us.
Charlotte looks directly at the camera and hesitates.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
And I will be married to Danny.
Charlotte looks back at the list and writes this down. She
pauses a moment, then writes the date:
2/18/11

driving go-carts, filming a man slapping another man across
the face, backdiving off of a waterfall, riding on a horse
over a jump, reading a novel in a graveyard, sock shopping,
and writing story notes on a wall covered in giant pieces of
newsprint paper.
CUT BACK TO:
INT. CHARLOTTE’S DORM ROOM
Charlotte is staring at her sheet of paper.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I’m not complicated, just complexly
put together. I’m not a quitter,
and I’m not a failure. I’m simply
just a writer, a simply
well-rounded, audacious,
intelligent and experienced writer
that doesn’t know what she wants in
5 years time.
CUT TO:
Montage of several different shots of Charlotte in her room,
thinking:
Laying on her side on her bed, lifting a 5-pound weight,
laying back on her bed with her head hanging off the side of
it, biting her nails, dancing around her room, doing a
sudoku puzzle, watching a movie on her laptop, and drinking
a soda.
Charlotte sits back down at her desk and stares at the piece
of paper. She turns around to her roommates side of the
room.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
For starters, I will have my own
place.
Charlotte writes it down.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
(pause)
I will have a novel published.
Charlotte writes this down. She continues to write as ideas
come to her.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I will...have a dog, will have
finally traveled out of the
country...will be a successful
writer.
Charlotte looks at the short list she’s created and opens up
a drawer, finding a small picture of her and Danny under the
clutter. She looks at a piece of paper taped above her desk
that says:
I HOPE. I DREAM. I BELIEVE.
In her handwriting. Charlotte looks back at the picture of
her and Danny.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
I hope. I dream. I believe, in us.
Charlotte looks directly at the camera and hesitates.
CHARLOTTE V.O.
And I will be married to Danny.
Charlotte looks back at the list and writes this down. She
pauses a moment, then writes the date:
2/18/11
MAIN TITLE: 5 YEARS FROM NOW
